Optimizing DAZ Models for Unreal Engine

When importing DAZ models into Unreal Engine, it's not uncommon to encounter issues with texture poking through clothing. This is often due to the model not being optimized for gaming and containing unnecessary vertices and polygons. In this article, we'll explore how to optimize your DAZ models for use in Unreal Engine.

One of the first steps is to compile your model and inspect it in the viewport. You may notice that some skin texture pokes through the pants or other clothing items. To resolve this issue, you need to pin the main mesh component 'Mesh' in the Node Set Master Pose Component.

To change character templates in a game menu by pinning a mesh variable, you can assign assets for later use under New Mesh in Set Skeletal Mesh. Select your asset from the drop-down menu and ensure that it's set as the 'target' component or slot by dragging from the component tree to the pins.

The Node Set Master Pose Component is the main character mesh component, while Set Skeletal Mesh is the clothing asset slot. In the construction script, route the following nodes for each component:

* Set Master Pose Component: This component is a slot for assigning different clothing to the main character mesh.

* Set Skeletal Mesh: This component is a slot for adding new skeletal mesh components as needed for clothing pieces.

To add new skeletal mesh components in the view tab, select 'Add New Skeletal Mesh' and create as many components as you need for each clothing piece. In the main mesh component, insert your retargeted DAZ character and set the Animation Blueprint you created by retargeting.

If you want to make this character your player character, duplicate or edit the 'Third Person BP' or similar blueprint. Additionally, create a Character Blueprint if your actor should walk around later in the game.

By following these steps, you can optimize your DAZ models for use in Unreal Engine and achieve smooth, realistic animations with minimal texture poking through clothing.
